Shelf Control #3 – The Uninvited

Shelf Control is all about the books we want to read and already own! Sometimes the best books are right underneath our noses!

Each Wednesday, following Bookshelf Fantasies I will be highlighting one book off of my large pile of unread books that I own! Hopefully it will spark some interest and encourage me to read just a little more!

My Shelf Control pick of the week is:

The Uninvited

Title: The Uninvited

Author: Tin Wynne-Jones

Published: May 12, 2009

Length:  353 Pages

Synopsis via GoodreadsMimi Shapiro had a disturbing freshman year at NYU, thanks to a foolish affair with a professor who still haunts her caller ID. So when her artist father, Marc, offers the use of his remote Canadian cottage, she’s glad to hop in her Mini Cooper and drive up north. The house is fairy-tale quaint, and the key is hidden right where her dad said it would be, so she’s shocked to find someone already living there — Jay, a young musician, who is equally startled to meet Mimi and immediately accuses her of leaving strange and threatening tokens inside: a dead bird, a snakeskin, a cricket sound track embedded in his latest composition. But Mimi has just arrived, so who is responsible? And more alarmingly, what does the intruder want?

Part gripping thriller, part family drama, this fast-paced novel plays out in alternating viewpoints, in a pastoral setting that is evocative and eerie — a mysterious character in its own right

How I Got It: I have had this book so long (shame on me), I really have no idea!

When I Got It: April 21, 2013

Why I Want to Read it: It sounds interesting, and sometimes I do enjoy a good mystery, but it’s definitely not what I’m usually drawn to. It doesn’t have the best ratings compared to what I usually read, but that doesn’t mean it’ll be bad! I will have to pick this one up soon!

Lion of Macedon

Title: Lion of Macedon (Greek Series)

Author: David Gemmell

Published: 2010 (Originally published May 15th, 1991)

Length: 502 Pages

Synopsis via GoodreadsOver and again, the aged seeress Tamis scried all the possible tomorrows. In every one, dark forces threatened Greece; terrible evil was poised to reenter the world. The future held only one hope: a half-caste Spartan boy, Parmenion. So Tamis made it her mission to see that Parmenion would before the deadliest warrior in the world — no matter what the cost. Raised to manhood in Sparta, bullied and forced to fight for his life every day, Parmenion had no notion of the unseen dimensions of magic and mystery that shaped his fate. He grew in strength and cunning. His military genius earned him the title Strategos in Sparta. His triumphs for the city of Thebes made him a hero. And finally his fate led him to the service of Philip of Macedon. As Tamis had foreseen, Parmenion’s destiny was tied to the Dark God, to Philip, and to the yet-unborn Alexander. All too soon the future was upon them. Parmenion stood poised to defeat evil — or to open the gate for the Dark God to reenter the world.

How I Got It: I believe I got this one at a book sale! (I mean that’s where most of my books come from anyways!)

When I Got It: May 16, 2015

Why I Want to Read it: I’m really into ancient Greece & Rome and love fantasy books!

Title: The Cellist of Sarajevo

Author: Steven Galloway

Published: February 6, 2009

Length: 258 Pages

Synopsis via Goodreads: Sarajevo, a city under siege. As the mortars falls and snipers conduct their deadly business, a cellist sits at his window, playing Albinoni’s adagio. When a bomb kills twenty-two people waiting in line to buy bread on the street below, he vows to carry his cello into the cratered street at four each afternoon for the next twenty-two days and play the same adagio in memory of the dead. Unknown to the cellist, a young woman watches his performances more avidly than anyone else. For she is the counter-sniper chosen to protect him from the enemy she knows lurks nearby with gun poised and ready to shoot. Can she keep the cellist alive? And what will it cost her to do so?

How I Got It: My boyfriend bought it for me, he read this book in school and it was his favorite.

When I Got It: September 24, 2013 (Thanks Goosdreads for having that exact date.)

Why I Want to Read it: Mostly because my boyfriend bought it for me, he is not an avid reader so usually when he tells me to read something, I do. I think it’s so different from what I normally read and it hasn’t come up in my TBR jar because I keep adding new books, I just haven’t gotten around to it yet.
